Shooting at White House Correspondents' Dinner — Gunman Charged, Trump & Officials Evacuated
The most shocking story of the weekend: a gunman armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives attempted to storm the White House Correspondents' Dinner at the Washington Hilton on Saturday night, April 25 — while President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and hundreds of top officials and journalists were seated inside the ballroom. The suspect fired shots at a security checkpoint, wounding one Secret Service agent who was wearing a bulletproof vest and survived. The gunman was tackled to the ground and arrested before reaching the ballroom.
The suspected shooter has been identified as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, a part-time teacher and video game developer from Torrance, California. Authorities say Allen traveled by train from Los Angeles to Chicago, then on to Washington D.C., where he checked into the same hotel as the event. In a note he allegedly sent to family members approximately 10 minutes before the attack, Allen apologized to loved ones and stated he believed it was his duty to target Trump administration officials. Allen's sister had previously warned law enforcement that her brother made radical statements and had referenced a plan to "do something" to fix the state of the world.
"It does appear that he did in fact set out to target folks that work in the administration, likely including the president — but I want to wait and not get ahead of us on that."
— Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, NBC's Meet the Press, April 27, 2026Trump, speaking on CBS's 60 Minutes on Sunday, praised the Secret Service but pivoted to criticizing the media — saying the press and the Democratic Party are "almost one in the same." Former President Obama issued a statement urging Americans to "reject the idea that violence has any place in our democracy." Allen now faces charges of using a firearm during a crime of violence and assaulting a federal officer with a dangerous weapon. The White House Correspondents' Association has announced its board will meet to assess how to move forward.

Iran Peace Talks Collapse — Trump Cancels Pakistan Trip, Ceasefire Holds But War Risks Rise
The second major story gripping the world today: the second round of US–Iran peace talks in Islamabad collapsed over the weekend. Trump abruptly canceled the planned trip by US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Pakistan on Saturday, citing "tremendous infighting and confusion" within Iran's leadership. Iran's FM Abbas Araghchi had arrived in Islamabad but refused to meet US envoys directly, briefing Pakistani mediators instead before departing for Muscat, Oman.
Iran's President Pezeshkian declared on Sunday that Tehran would not enter "forced negotiations" while under military pressure. Meanwhile, Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) boarded two container ships near the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, triggering a fresh oil price spike — Brent crude surged above $107 a barrel in early Monday trading. The ceasefire technically remains in force, but with no expiration date and no new talks scheduled, markets and analysts are bracing for continued volatility.
"Too much time wasted on traveling, too much work! Nobody knows who is in charge, including them. Also, we have all the cards; they have none!"

Deadly Tornadoes Rip Through Oklahoma, Texas & Midwest — Millions Under Severe Weather Threat
A brutal and ongoing severe weather outbreak is tearing across the central United States, with Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, and Illinois all suffering significant tornado damage over the past week — with more severe weather forecast through Monday and Tuesday. In Enid, Oklahoma, an EF-4 tornado — one of the most destructive ratings — struck on Thursday, April 23, damaging at least 40 homes in the Gray Ridge area and temporarily closing Vance Air Force Base. On the same night, a high-end EF3 tornado passed through Kankakee, Illinois, damaging over 500 buildings, killing one person, and producing potentially record-breaking hail measuring 5–6 inches in diameter.
In Texas on Friday, an EF2 tornado destroyed one home near Runaway Bay, killing one person and injuring several others. As of Sunday, Oklahoma is still in recovery mode from 10 injuries and widespread damage, while eastern New Mexico and far west Texas remain under extreme critical fire weather warnings. Wind gusts up to 60 mph, combined with low humidity, are creating extreme fire conditions. The National Weather Service has issued warnings for eastern Kansas, western Missouri, southern Iowa, Nebraska, and the Chicago metro area for Monday.
"A very active spring weather pattern is forecast for the central US through Sunday and into early next week — potential for tornadoes, large hail, flash floods, wildfires and snow depending on the region."

Georgia Wildfires Exceed 31 Square Miles — State of Emergency for 91 Counties, Less Than 20% Contained
Two massive wildfires in southeastern Georgia continue to grow and have now collectively exceeded 31 square miles — and remain less than 20% contained. Governor Brian Kemp declared a State of Emergency covering 91 counties on April 22, directing the Georgia Forestry Commission and all relevant state agencies to mobilize maximum resources for active firefighting in the southern region of the state. The Brantley County fire is the largest and most destructive, with the county Sheriff's Office reporting it has reached capacity for first responder donations.
The Georgia Forestry Commission has issued a Burn Ban Order covering all 91 counties under the state of emergency. Thousands of residents have been urged to evacuate, with FEMA emergency shelters opened across the region. Firefighters are battling extreme conditions: high temperatures, low humidity, and gusty winds are hampering containment efforts. Governor Kemp toured the fire damage Sunday and is expected to request federal disaster assistance from the White House.

Stock Markets at All-Time Highs — Big Tech Earnings Week Begins as Fed Holds Rates
Despite geopolitical chaos and a shooting at the nation's most prominent press event, global stock markets are surging. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite ended last week at fresh all-time highs, and April is shaping up to be the strongest rebound month in years: S&P 500 up more than 9%, Nasdaq up over 15%, and the Dow up more than 6% month-to-date. Asia-Pacific markets were mostly higher on Monday — Japan's Nikkei 225 jumped 1.4% to a record high, and South Korea's Kospi surged 1.83% to another peak.
This week is a "monster week" for markets: five of the "Magnificent Seven" — Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, Microsoft (Wednesday), and Apple (Thursday) — are all reporting quarterly earnings. Analysts expect strong AI-driven revenue and are already pricing in optimism: all five are up more than 6–10% this month ahead of results. The Federal Reserve also meets Wednesday, in what may be Jerome Powell's final meeting as Chair before Kevin Warsh is expected to take over in May. Markets are pricing in a 100% chance of no rate change, with cuts not expected until 2027.
"Next week is a monster week for Big Tech earnings and we expect more good news on the horizon from results and guidance as the AI Revolution steamrolls ahead."

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office arrested the suspect on Friday, April 24, following an intensive investigation that began after the couple failed to make contact with family and colleagues. Pope Leo XIV Criticizes Firing Squads & Calls for Iran Peace — Immigration Court Rules Against DACA Recipient
Pope Leo XIV made international headlines this weekend on two fronts. Speaking in a video message, he reiterated the Catholic Church's firm position that the death penalty is "inadmissible" — a pointed rebuke issued just hours after the US Justice Department announced it would allow firing squads for federal executions. The Pope also called for the United States and Iran to return to the negotiating table, urging leaders to adopt "a culture of peace" and calling the negotiations "complex but essential." His words resonated globally, though the Trump administration showed no sign of shifting its stance on either issue.
Separately, in a significant immigration ruling, the Board of Immigration Appeals — an administrative court within the Justice Department — sided with Homeland Security and reversed a lower court ruling that had terminated removal proceedings for Catalina "Xóchitl" Santiago, a DACA recipient. The ruling signals continued aggressive enforcement of immigration restrictions and is expected to be challenged in federal courts.
